Pet friendly workplaces

Few Quick Tips to Help You Get Started Today

Depending on your organization and workplace type (corporation, hospitality, travel, housing, local government and more) and with almost 85 million homes in the US having pets, a pet-friendly policy can have tremendous social, emotional and economic benefits. Here are a few tips for getting started today as the world starts to reopen.

  1. Consider  the benefits of a healthier workforce, greater collaboration, lowered stress levels and the impact they will have on your business.
  2. Survey your employees for interest in a pet friendly workplace.
  3. Consider the logistics of how to accommodate pets in your facility ,i.e., property management approval, insurance coverages, pet and no pet areas, nearby green space, etc.
  4. Create a pet policy and pet parent agreement. We can help you with that.
  5. If you are not able to have pets in the workplace consider adding employee benefits such as pet insurance, pawternity leave, work from home days,  etc.

According to a Forbes.com article, dogs are natural conversation starters. Employees are more likely to approach each other when there is a dog present to break the ice. Companies may find, too,  that workplace gossip decreases because people would rather talk about their dogs than other employees.

A recent study conducted by Nationwide, in partnership with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), reveals that 90 percent of employees in pet friendly workplaces feel highly connected to their company’s mission; fully engaged with their work; and willing to recommend their employer to others. In contrast, less than 65 percent of employees in non-pet friendly workplaces made the same claims.

When creating your pet friendly program keep in mind that while in business it's often said "It's business not personal." In pet friendly it's business but it's also personal. Words, actions and intentions matter. The pet loving community is large, close knit and well connected on social media. Pet friendly matters.
